What this product or service is

MicrodataDownload is a convenient way to download and analyse basic microdata (unit record data).

Features you will find

  • Unit record data about people, households or businesses that can be downloaded for statistical analysis in your own environment, such as modelling.
  • Highly confidentialised data items, usually provided in ranges or broad groupings.
  • Securely download in your choice of file formats, with most available in SAS, SPSS, Stata and CSV.
  • Over 100 basic microdata files available, including Census of Population and Housing, health, income, education, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, migrants, crime, disability, ageing and carers.

Who the service is for

Users who want to securely download and analyse basic microdata (unit record data) in your own environment, such as:

  • Researchers
  • Academics
  • Government employees (Commonwealth, State and Territory, Local)
  • Only Australian organisations may apply for MicrodataDownload, International organisations may request access to specific basic microdata files, which will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

This service is suitable for users with intermediate statistical skills.

Accessing this service

Subscriptions to MicroodataDownload are managed at an organisational level. If your organisation has already subscribed to MicrodataDownload, you can register in the Registration Centre using your organisation email address and you will be automatically joined to your organisation for immediate access to subscribed products.

Pricing

Costs for MicrodataDownload are per organisation and charged as an annual subscription. You can access and download all basic microdata files to analyse in your own environment and add unlimited members to your organisation at any time at no additional charge. Privacy

Registration, access to, and management of the use of MicrodataDownload is through the Registration Centre. 

The types of personal information we collect includes:

  • basic contact details including name and address, phone number, email address for business and private, name of employer, job title and signature.
  • organisation characteristics (e.g. business name, address, contact details, ABN, organisation email domains).

Personal information is retained and then destroyed in line with current legislative requirements.

Accessibility and inclusiveness

As this is a machine-to-machine service there are no in-built accessibility features.

The ABS Website contains a wide range of statistical outputs in an accessible format.
